Geonta Simmons is running for the Anne Arundel County Council because it's time for bold leadership. He’s not running for a title, status, or popularity—he’s running because District 1 is his home, and he’s tired of seeing it neglected by those who claim to have its best interests at heart.

Hometown Roots. Local Commitment

Raised for most of his life in Brooklyn Park, Geonta Simmons grew up in a working-class household with three step-siblings and parents who instilled the values of hard work, service, and community. He’s a proud product of District 1, the only place he’s ever called home—and his connections stretch across every corner of it.

In 2009, Geonta’s family moved to Glen Burnie from Baltimore City, where he started 4th grade at Hilltop Elementary. As his family transitioned through life’s ups and downs, they later moved to Hanover, where Geonta attended MacArthur Middle School. It was there—in the halls of MacArthur, on weekends at Arundel Mills Mall, and through hangouts in the Meade Village community, that Geonta began forming lifelong friendships and memories that shaped his early teen years.

By 2013, his family sought more affordable living and returned to North County, settling in Brooklyn Park, where Geonta has lived for the past 13 years. He enrolled at Brooklyn Park Middle School, graduated 8th grade, and went on to finish his education at North County High School (#GoKnights). During high school, Geonta expanded his skills through the Graphic Design program at the Center of Applied Technology North (CATN), graduating with a professional certificate.

Geonta’s story is a District 1 story—real, rooted, and raised right here. His journey wasn’t built overnight. It was built block by block, school by school, and community by community.

Rooted in Community, Raised to Serve

Service runs in Geonta’s blood. His father, George “Juke Box” Simmons, has spent over 27 years helping low-income families through the Baltimore City Housing Authority. Beyond his career, George dedicated 15+ years to coaching youth football, including mentoring Geonta and his older stepbrother Brandon with the Brooklyn Park Broncos.

From his father, Geonta learned what real leadership looks like: showing up, working hard, and giving back—consistently. Most recently, Geonta’s father was one of the first supervisors on the scene following the tragic mass shooting during the Brooklyn Day celebration—helping lead the investigation and clean-up efforts. But for him, it wasn’t just a job. It was about showing up for the Brooklyn community when they needed him most.

Geonta’s interest in public service began early in high school, sparked by frustration with how disconnected politics felt from real life. He didn’t know where to begin—until one day, he took a chance and sent an email that would open the door to a path of purpose.

From an Email to a Life In Public Service

Geonta’s political journey started at just 17 years old, volunteering for local campaigns in small, one-day roles. Everything changed when he sent a spontaneous email to his Councilwoman, Sarah Lacey, expressing his desire to get more involved in local government. Expecting a generic staff response, Geonta was surprised when Lacey personally replied and invited him to meet.

Impressed by his work ethic and passion, Lacey encouraged Geonta to take on a larger role, ultimately leading him to join her 2022 State Senate campaign for District 32 as a full-time team member. That same year, he was accepted into the National Democratic Training Committees' (NDTC) competitive 3-Month Staff Academy, where he specialized in digital political strategy and earned a national certification in the field.

While Lacey’s Senate bid was unsuccessful, Geonta’s drive and talent did not go unnoticed. Many local leaders encouraged him to apply for the vacant male 12B seat on the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee (AACDCC). At just 22 years old, Geonta was appointed in January 2023, officially beginning his career in Democratic leadership.

A Record of Local Leadership

Since joining the AACDCC, Geonta has played a key role in transforming the Anne Arundel County Democratic Party, focusing on:
✅ Electing down-ballot Democrats and strengthening grassroots campaigns.

✅ Innovating communication strategies as the Chair of the Communications Sub-Committee.

✅ Bringing fresh ideas to engage and mobilize new voters.

✅ Interviewed & Questions candidates applying for legislative vacancies within District 30 & District 30A.

All of this while balancing full-time college studies and full-time employment—a testament to his unwavering work ethic and commitment to public service. He graduated Anne Arundel Community College with Honors and then graduated with his B.A in Policy, Politics & International Policy from the University of Baltimore.

Even through the campaign & full-time employment, Geonta will be pursuing his Master’s Degree in Public Administration. His education, combined with his hands-on political experience, has given him both the knowledge and the real-world skills to advocate effectively for District 1.

Geonta’s Promise to You

Geonta is ready to bring his passion, experience, and fighting spirit to the Anne Arundel County Council. He is committed to delivering real results for District 1—because for him, this isn’t just politics. It’s home.
